Safe, secure and confident
To a Subaru engineer, safety is not only a concern, it's a cornerstone. This is why Subaru builds vehicles that inspire confidence and deliver superior levels of protection through the use of the most technologically advanced active and passive safety systems available. No surprise, then, that the Subaru Legacy continues to raise the bar with enhanced safety systems designed to keep all occupants safe and secure.
Always on guard
A world-class all-wheel drive system, striking agility, standard Vehicle Dynamics Control with Active Torque Vectoring, ABS, superior visibility and a low centre of gravity give the Subaru Legacy the tools needed to be an active safety superstar. Then, next-generation thinking in the form of EyeSight®◊ Driver Assist Technology elevates active safety and accident avoidance to entirely new levels.
When superior engineering and smart design meet in the middle, everything becomes clear. The Subaru Legacy achieves heightened visibility through a steeply raked windshield, an optimized A-pillar and front quarter windows, higher and more natural passenger seating, and redesigned door-mounted side mirrors to reduce blind spots.
EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology
Several trim levels are available with this award-winning system, which utilizes two cameras to monitor activity on the road ahead, help identify potential danger and provide assistance to the driver when needed most. EyeSight® incorporates five distinct advanced active-safety systems in one: Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Vehicle Lane Departure and Sway Warning with Lane Keep Assist. When equipped with EyeSight®, the Subaru Legacy has earned the highest possible front crash prevention rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)**.
High Beam Assist
Standard on Legacy models equipped EyeSight®, this system allows the driver to keep the high beams activated at all times. When the EyeSight® camera system detects an oncoming vehicle or the distance to the vehicle in front has reduced, High Beam Assist automatically dims the headlights. When other vehicles are far enough away, the system switches the high beams on again.
Reverse Automatic Braking
Also included on models equipped with EyeSight®, this system detects obstructions behind the vehicle and automatically applies the brakes if it appears the risk of a collision is high. The system also incorporates a warning feature, which triggers different patterns of alarms according to the distance the car is away from an obstruction.
Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection System (SRVD)
The available SRVD system represents a big step towards full-perimeter preventative safety and has three distinct functions: Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Blind Spot Detection identifies vehicles behind the C-pillars and in other blind spots, while Lane Change Assist detects fast-approaching vehicles when changing lanes. Using a sensor in the back of the vehicle, Rear Cross Traffic Alert signals drivers of approaching vehicles while reversing, such as out of a parking space or driveway.
Being able to see behind is not only a great convenience, it's an essential active safety feature. With this system, a crystal-clear image of what's behind your vehicle is projected onto the centre console screen. For an even more natural, distortion-free image, the camera is located close to the centre of the vehicle and provides a wide view. The rearview camera takes confidence in everyday driving scenarios to new heights.
Auto-dimming Side Mirrors with Approach Lighting
When a vehicle approaches from behind or from an adjacent lane, these available mirrors automatically dim to protect your eyes from headlight glare. In addition, an approach lighting feature sees a beam of light projected from the door mirrors to help you locate door handles and avoid obstacles on the ground near the vehicle. On trim levels equipped with the SRVD system, the LED indicator lights are located on the inside of the mirror housing to ensure even better visibility for the driver.
Steering Responsive LED Headlights
These available LED headlights automatically move to coincide with the movement of the Legacy as it rounds corners, providing better illumination and increased levels of safety. The headlights themselves also cast a brighter and whiter beam for improved visibility. This system is available on Sport and Limited trim levels.
VDC with Active Torque Vectoring
The Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)† system, standard on all models, utilizes multiple sensors to assess when the limits of stability are near and then adjusts the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel to help keep the Legacy on-course. Also standard on all models is the Active Torque Vectoring system, which automatically applies brake pressure to the inside front wheel and distributes more torque to the outside front wheel during cornering. Together, these systems give the Legacy superior stability, better cornering capabilities and ultra-responsive handling.
†VDC is also known as electronic stability control.
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
This system incorporates the very latest thinking on active safety, including Electronic Brake-force Distribution (automatically adjusts front/rear brake balance under different vehicle loads), Brake Override (cuts engine power when the brakes are applied) and Brake Assist (provides added stopping power in emergency-braking situations). The ABS features improved brake feel and response, the result of constant improvements by Subaru engineers over the years. The system also incorporates a hill-holder feature, which helps prevent rollback when starting on inclines.
Strong, enduring, protecting
Passive safety systems pick up where active safety systems leave off. In the event that all the active safety systems cannot help the driver avoid an accident, every Subaru incorporates a range of passive safety systems designed to deliver class-leading levels of protection. Each model features an exceptionally rigid construction and incorporates the latest technologies; together, these advances minimize collision damage and, in turn, generate greater confidence behind the wheel.
Advanced Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frame
This advanced, proven frame design incorporates high-tensile steel, connects the roof to the side pillars and the floor, and utilizes cross-members to create a unified and super-strong structure. A front crumple zone provides further protection in the event of a frontal impact, and helps ensure that crash energy is either dissipated or redirected away from the passenger cabin.
The Legacy features a full complement of supplemental restraints, including dual-stage front airbags, front seat side-impact airbags, front seat cushion airbags and side-curtain airbags for front and rear outboard occupants. The network of smart sensors includes a rollover sensor, yet another example of an unwavering focus on providing class-leading passive safety.
Whiplash-reducing Front Seats
The front seats on the Subaru Legacy are designed with rigid frames, firm headrests and energy-absorbing inner seat springs. These features help mitigate the effects of a rear-end collision and reduce the chances of whiplash, another example of how Subaru goes the extra mile in order to protect occupants.
Every Subaru goes above and beyond common practice when it comes to your safety. In the event of a head-on collision, the SUBARU BOXER engine and transmission, already mounted low, are designed to absorb crash energy, then break away from the vehicle structure and drop below the passenger cabin for added protection.
