BRZ Features
Thing of beauty, corner carver
A tradition for meticulous and unique engineering was in full force during the development of the Subaru BRZ. The goal was to produce authentic sports car performance by combining a classic rear-wheel drive configuration, an aerodynamically sculpted shape, the lowest possible centre of gravity and the lightest possible construction. Now, with the all-new second-generation model, all of these characteristics have been elevated. This car is lower, more balanced, more aerodynamic and higher performing than ever before. The result is a beautiful 2+2 sports coupe—some would contend more beautiful than ever before.
Low-profile, sleek, aerodynamic design
Acres of style, even more substance: Some might think that the Subaru BRZ was designed for looks alone, but its low-slung body is aerodynamically sculpted to slice through the wind and create superior stability. This all-new model has a wider stance and features key aerodynamic enhancements—such as the side sill spoilers and the duck tail trunk spoiler—that drive higher levels of performance. The rear spoiler is less obtrusive than on the outgoing model, but creates more downforce, which aids in cornering grip.
LED Headlights and Accent Lighting
The completely redesigned LED headlight assembly features a new look for the head lamps, the molded outer cover and the black-coloured inner surround, all of which help create a more assertive and sportier face. The head lamps and indicator lamps incorporate an asymmetrical lens cover shape and blend together to form the Subaru C-shaped motif. To further emphasize this uniquely purposeful design, the BRZ word mark is stamped on the side section extensions.
Power-Adjustable Heated Mirrors
The redesigned side mirrors are the perfect solution for a purebred 2+2 sports coupe: small in size, yet big on visibility and aerodynamic performance. The mirrors are heated, power-adjustable and foldable for maximum convenience and safety. On models equipped with the SRVD system, the LED indicators are located outside the mirror surface to cut distortion and improve rearward visibility.
Lightweight Performance Alloy Wheels
The new alloy wheels combine slick design with lightweight, ultra-strong construction. These qualities enable the BRZ to handle the most challenging corners with increased capability and look great while doing it. The design also helps boost brake-cooling efficiency to give the car even better overall performance.

These ergonomically designed seats, redesigned for the all-new BRZ, provide improved support during enthusiastic cornering and superior comfort for longer, more leisurely drives. The base trim level features a premium sports fabric in a plain weave with carbon-like image, while the Sport-tech gain seats covered in leather and Ultrasuede® material.
World-class confidence comes standard
The all-new 2022 Subaru BRZ is completely reengineered from top to bottom—and heightened safety standards and increased confidence behind the wheel have been the driving forces behind its development. This is a purebred sports car that starts out from a position of strength: Designed with learnings from the Subaru Global Platform, the second-generation BRZ has a stronger frame with increased rigidity, lower weight and a lower centre of gravity. These features improve active and passive safety standards, striking the perfect balance between performance and safety, creating confidence on every type of road, under all possible conditions and at all times.
Superior engineering, world-class active safety
Right from the start, the Subaru BRZ has featured superb agility, superior visibility, powerful braking and class-leading safety systems. Now, with the introduction of the all-new second-generation BRZ, the active safety bar has been officially raised. For the first time, the BRZ comes with available steering responsive headlights and Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection. Other advanced safety systems—such as High Beam Assist, reverse automatic braking and award-winning EyeSight®◊ Driver Assist Technology—are now available on the BRZ for the first time. These developments have raised safety standards to never-before-seen heights, creating increased confidence with every mile driven.
EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology
For the first time ever, all BRZ models with the automatic transmission feature this award-winning active safety system as standard equipment. EyeSight® utilizes two cameras mounted on the windshield to monitor activity on the road ahead, help identify potential danger and provide assistance when needed most. The system features several different types of active assistance in one, including Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Brake Assist, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Sway Warning and Lead Vehicle Start Alert.
High Beam Assist
This system automatically switches the headlights from high beams to low when approaching other vehicles in the road ahead. As soon as the other vehicles are far enough away, the high beams automatically turn back on to ensure superior visibility in dark conditions. High Beam Assist is available on Sport-tech trim equipped with EyeSight®.
Reverse Automatic Braking
This advanced safety system utilizes proximity sensors to trigger a warning as your vehicle approaches an obstacle and automatically applies the brakes if a collision seems imminent. Reverse Automatic Braking is available on Sport-tech trim equipped with EyeSight®.
Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection (SRVD)
SRVD uses sensors to detect other vehicles and has three functions designed to heighten safety. Using LED indicators located inside the mirror surround, Blind Spot Detection identifies vehicles approaching your blind spots. Lane Change Assist detects vehicles approaching quickly from behind when you’re about to change lanes. Lastly, while reversing out of a driveway or parking space, Rear Cross Traffic Alert signals when vehicles or pedestrians are approaching from either side of your vehicle. The SRVD system is exclusive to the Sport-tech trims.
Rearview Camera
Positioned in the centre of the vehicle and located inside the trunk lid, the standard rearview camera captures a natural, distortion-free, wide view behind the vehicle and projects it onto the large centre console screen. When reversing, the screen also displays dynamic guide lines to help the driver gauge distances and the steering angles needed to perform picture-perfect manoeuvres every time.
Steering Responsive Headlights
Exclusively available on the Sport-tech trims, these LED headlights automatically angle in the direction of the turn, providing better illumination and increased levels of safety. LED headlights cast a brighter and whiter beam for improved visibility, creating safer driving scenarios even on the darkest nights.
Multi-mode Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control System (TCS)
The completely reengineered Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)† system employs an array of sensors to monitor the vehicle to ensure maximum confidence under all driving conditions. The system features up to five driver-selectable modes, including settings for everything from snow-covered commutes to summer track-day sessions. For those who truly want to push the car to its natural limits, there’s even a setting that switches off the Traction Control System (TCS) entirely.
† VDC is also known as electronic stability control.
Braking Systems
The advanced braking system incorporates the latest thinking on stopping performance to deliver superior levels of control and safety. Electronic Brake-force Distribution automatically adjusts brake pressure front-to-back in response to adjust for varying vehicle loads. Brake Assist delivers added brake pressure in panic-stop situations. Brake Override cuts engine power when the brakes and the throttle are applied simultaneously, while Hill Start Assist automatically helps prevent rollback on inclines. Large ventilated discs on all four corners provide superior stopping power in all conditions and all-new side vents in the front bumper redirect air to provide improved cooling.
Engineered for superior protection
The all-new, completely reengineered 2022 Subaru BRZ now rides on an improved vehicle platform, which delivers increased strength, structural rigidity and crashworthiness. In the event that a collision is unavoidable, a suite of advanced passive safety systems is on standby, ready to offer superior protection for all occupants. This combination of sheer strength and constant readiness is just part of the reason Subaru vehicles are ranked among the safest on the planet.
Next-generation Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frame
This proprietary advanced frame design is more robust than ever and capable of absorbing even more impact energy. The design strengthens the passenger compartment by linking the roof to the side pillars and the floor. As a result, impact energy coming from all directions is dissipated and diverted away from the passenger cabin. A new manufacturing process and more liberal use of high-tensile strength steel has resulted in stronger joint structures and increased rigidity overall, taking the already impressive safety standards to new heights.
Airbags
The all-new Subaru BRZ comes standard with a total of seven airbags, a reflection of a relentless approach to passive safety. The collection comprises dual-stage deployment front airbags and seat-mounted side-impact airbags for the driver and co-driver, a driver knee airbag, as well as a pair of side-curtain airbags engineered to protect all passengers.
Whiplash-reducing Front Seats
The front seats are specifically engineered to dampen the effects of a rear-end collision, the most common accident scenario, and reduce the chance of neck injuries. The unique features of these seats include an extremely rigid frame, energy-absorbing inner seat springs and an anti-whiplash headrest. These features have been exhaustively tested to ensure the very highest levels of performance under duress.
Break-away Engine
The new chassis design has amplified one of the trademark characteristics of the Subaru BRZ—its inherently low centre of gravity and low positioning of the SUBARU BOXER® engine. In the new design, the engine is set even lower, which makes for a safer vehicle. Should a head-on collision occur, the engine and transmission are both designed to absorb impact energy and then break away from the vehicle structure and drop below the passenger compartment for added safety.
Engineered to raise the bar
When the engineers at Subaru first conceived of the BRZ, they began with a clean sheet of paper. When it was time to tackle the all-new, second-generation model, they took what was so successful the first time around and elevated everything to new heights. The process involved an all-new SUBARU BOXER® engine, updated transmissions, new suspension and steering systems—everything calibrated to work within an all-new design. The result is a Subaru—and a sports car that’s been engineered to outperform more than ever.
The low-profile, high-revving SUBARU BOXER®
The all-new, naturally aspirated 2.4L SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder incorporates the latest technology, including direct and port fuel injection, to deliver free-revving performance and remarkable efficiency. Although this engine has similar dimensions and weight compared to the previous BRZ engine, it delivers more horsepower overall and higher torque in all RPM ranges. The new engine generates 228 horsepower (at 7,000 rpm) as compared to 205 horsepower for the previous engine, an increase of some 11 per cent. Torque has also increased, from 156 lb-ft to 184 lb-ft (at 3,700 rpm), a gain of almost 18 per cent. The result: A sports car engine with a 7,500-rpm redline that sounds like a mechanical symphony, rewards you with sharp acceleration and ensures sheer joy behind the wheel.
Transmissions + RWD
The optimal sports car drivetrain is given a boost here by the choice of two performance-oriented transmissions. Both the 6-speed Manual Transmission (6MT) and 6-speed Automatic Transmission (6AT) have been completely reengineered on the all-new BRZ. The goal was to better transfer the increased power to the rear wheels, ensuring a smooth, seamless and quick driving experience. The transmissions are also ideally positioned and mounted low in the chassis to ensure near-perfect weight distribution and a lower centre of gravity overall.
6-speed Manual Transmission (6MT)
This short-throw transmission has been revised to accommodate the increased power and torque from the all-new SUBARU BOXER® engine. Other enhancements to the 6MT include increased gear strength, better pedal resistance when operating the clutch, and lighter and smoother shifting action. The intuitive positioning of the shift lever allows for quick operation, while the overall feel of the linkage is one of solidity and precision. The first five gears provide the thrills, while sixth is a true overdrive gear for heightened fuel efficiency.
6-speed Automatic Transmission (6AT)
This slick transmission has been strengthened to support the higher engine output of the all-new BRZ. The 6AT also shifts faster than ever, the result of more clutch plates used in the design and revised adaptive software that responds to driver inputs more rapidly. The transmission comes with paddle shifters, automatic throttle blipping on downshifts, and a Sport setting and Manual Mode that are 30% more responsive than Normal Mode. For increased control in wintry conditions, there’s also a Snow setting.
Engineered for the twists and turns
The key to any true sports car is not acceleration or top speed—the key is balance. Striking the perfect balance relies on the engineering team’s ability to land on the ideal power-to-weight ratio and the optimum suspension tuning, thereby ensuring the car is a natural extension of the driver. A chassis engineered for perfect balance is the starting point for a car designed for sheer driving pleasure.
Lightweight Body
The goal in developing the Subaru BRZ was to build a lightweight sports car with an ultra-low centre of gravity, quick steering, tremendous strength and a superior power-to-weight ratio. This goal was achieved by positioning the drivetrain low in the chassis, constructing the hood, front fenders and roof from aluminum and using lightweight, high-tensile strength steel for most of the body.
Front Suspension
A popular choice for sports cars of all types, the MacPherson® strut front suspension system helps create superior driving dynamics. For the all-new BRZ, the system now features lighter-weight materials, revised spring rates and improved damping characteristics, all engineered to secure better steering response. A rebound spring is also placed inside the struts to reduce body roll and increase control.
Rear Suspension
The focus for the completely reengineered rear suspension begins with a new, more rigid subframe designed to handle the increased power and torque of the new engine. A rear stabilizer mounted directly to the chassis, retuned springs and shock absorbers with improved damping characteristics, have been added to give the all-new BRZ more composure, increased stability and more intuitive handling overall.
