How to Change Your Subaru Key Fob Battery: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide
If your Subaru key fob isn’t working as smoothly as usual—or stops responding altogether—it might be time to replace the battery. This guide walks you through everything you need to know, whether you drive a Crosstrek, Outback, Forester, or any other Subaru model!
What Battery Does My Subaru Key Fob Use?
Subaru models use two main types of key fobs, and the battery type depends on the kind you have:
Push-to-Start Vehicles: Use a CR2032 battery
Key-Start Vehicles: Use a CR1620 battery

Both are coin-style batteries available at most hardware stores or pharmacies. You can also check with our parts team at Ogilvie Subaru if you’re unsure which type your vehicle needs.
What You’ll Need:
- A CR2032 or CR1620 battery (check your owner’s manual or match the one currently inside)
- A small flathead screwdriver
- A clean, flat surface
Step-by-Step: How to Replace a Subaru Key Fob Battery
- Locate the seam on the key fob
Look around the edge of your fob to find where the two halves meet.
- Gently pry it open
Insert the flathead screwdriver into the seam and carefully twist to separate the fob. Work around the edge if needed—go slowly to avoid cracking the plastic.
- Remove the old battery
Once opened, you’ll see the battery in place. Note the orientation (usually with the positive side facing up), then pop the old battery out.
- Install the new battery
Place the new battery in the same position as the old one, making sure it sits flush and secure.
- Close the fob
Line up the two halves and press them back together until they click into place.
- Test the key fob
Try locking and unlocking your vehicle to make sure everything is working correctly.
