The first test drives of the 2019 Subaru Forester

Published on October 31 2018

The new generation of the Subaru Forester has just entered the market. Journalists had the opportunity to try it recently and they had a lot of good things to say about the new Subaru compact SUV introduced at the last New York Auto Show. Let's take a closer look.

The chassis and suspension are stellar. The Forester becomes the fourth vehicle to move to the new Subaru Global Platform that underpins the Impreza, Crosstrek, all-new three-row Ascent, and now the Forester. The ride quality is excellent on the revised suspension. A more rigid body and heavy use of structural adhesive ensure the ride is comfortable and free of excessive noise, harshness or annoying vibrations. Body roll is almost nonexistent.

Steering is effortless but you still feel like you are the one driving; it’s not a numbed-out experience. Subaru redesigned the steering to reduce the delay between input and response and added torque vectoring for better cornering. Brakes are smooth and controlled; less pedal stroke before braking gives the driver confidence – MotorTrend

And that’s just the point. While our Forester had a quite literal mountain to climb this afternoon, metaphorically, the new boy has anything but. Favouring an evolutionary rather than revolutionary overhaul for its golden goose is almost certain to pay dividends for Subaru, with customers requesting higher safety standards and driver assist systems, more cabin space, and a blend of comfort and practicality that works across a variety of road and off-road surfaces. Each of which has been delivered, and each of which, surely, will see the fifth generation improve upon an already impressive sales record. Anything else really would be crazy Driving.ca

The Forester Sport is arguably the sweet-spot in the model line, as it shares a number of standard niceties with the higher-spec Premium model including an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the aforementioned Wi-Fi hotspot, automatic high-beam headlights, and a proximity key with push-button start. Alas, Sport buyers will have to put up with gauche orange accents throughout the cabin. Orange also makes its way to the lower-extremities of the exterior, where the bright hue complements a number of Sport-specific black exterior pieces – Motor1
