A few tips when buying your first car

Published on February 28 2019

Buying your first vehicle is an important step, but it can also be a bit nerve-wracking for many of us. A simple internet search reveals that there are a lot of models that are available to consumers, and it can be easy to get lost in everything and not know where to start. Here are some tips to help you find the perfect first car that will respect your budget while having all of your needs covered.

Start by establishing your budget

If you have put money aside and want to pay your car in full upon purchase, it’s pretty simple. The amount you have in your savings account will determine the budget. Just don’t forget taxes and, if you are buying a new vehicle, various other taxes as well as delivery fees. If you plan on leasing or financing, you need to know how much you want to pay per month.

Lease or finance?

If you turn towards a new vehicle, you will have the option to finance or lease. Leasing is interesting if we want to reduce our monthly payments or if we believe that our needs may change in the coming years. That said, leasing a car is like having an apartment. It rarely has any financial benefits in the long run, aside from the lower monthly payment. So if you are looking for a vehicle that you will keep more than four or five years, buying is probably more beneficial.

Determine your needs

If you do a lot of sports, or you have a growing family, or if you think you will be starting a family in the next few years, you’ll probably want to turn towards a sport utility vehicle, a minivan or at the very least a sedan. If you prefer having fun behind the wheel, maybe a sports car or coupe would be preferable. The idea here is to establish a short list of needs to once again be able to know where to start our search.
