When we think of performance cars and vehicles that can go fast, we often think of V6 or big V8 engines. A couple of years ago, those are the type of engines that you needed if you wanted to go fast while four-cylinder powertrains were left to fuel-efficient daily drivers. Not so today. Look no further than Subaru’s 2.0L Turbocharged DOHC DI 4-Cyl Boxer engine that most notably powers the Subaru WRX.

The WRX is the quintessential small performance car. Inspired by Subaru’s rally heritage, it is quick, agile and responsive. It is also relatively fuel efficient for a car with so much acceleration capability. All that is made possible by Subaru’s 2.0L turbo Boxer engine that finds itself on Ward’s top 10 best engine list for 2015.

Offering 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, the four-cylinder turbo Boxer engine offers what Ward’s calls "an uncommon sense of immediacy". A variant of the 2.0L turbo is also offered in the Subaru Forester, but it gains more power in the WRX. It also shines by offering not even a hint of turbo lag as it responds immediately when you floor the right pedal.

In the WRX, the 2.0L Turbocharged DOHC DI 4-Cyl Boxer engine gets a host of mechanical improvements and modifications which, among other things, allow the engine to reach a higher redline ( 6,700 RPM) while providing a wider torque range compared to the Forester.

Peak power is available at just 2,500 RPM which means that the WRX simply jumps off the line. From a practical point of view, having that much torque at such low RPM means that when driving around the city or when passing, the WRX responds quickly and the driver immediately feels all the power from the engine.

Finally, according to Ward’s, some of the editors of the magazine managed to finish their test run of the 2.0L Turbocharged DOHC DI 4-Cyl Boxer engine with an average fuel-economy of 8.4 liters per 100 kilometers. Rather impressive for an engine that offers 268 hp.

Come drive the new 2015 Subaru WRX today at Ogilvie Motors and find out for yourself why its engine was named one of the top 10 best for 2015 by Ward’s Automotive.
