Subaru unveils the 2018 Subaru WRX and the Crosstrek Concept

Published on January 31 2017

January is certainly one of the most important months in the automotive industry, with two very important car shows, the North American International Auto Show in Detroit at the beginning of the month and the Montreal International Auto Show a few days later. Subaru was present at both shows and unveiled two vehicles starting with the new 2018 Subaru WRX in Detroit followed by the Crosstrek Concept in Montreal.

The Crosstrek Concept at the Montreal Auto Show

With the redesigned Subaru Impreza arriving on the market last year, it is normal that Subaru is now moving on to developing the next-generation Subaru Crosstrek, a subcompact utility vehicle that shares its main mechanical components with the Impreza. We know that the new Crosstrek will be presented in a few weeks at the Geneva International Motor Show, but in the meantime visitors at the Montreal show got a chance to see the Crosstrek Concept.

The latter gives a good overview of Subaru's visual direction with the upcoming production Crosstrek. The more muscular and aggressive lines of the Crosstrek Concept should inspire a more muscular and rugged production model. Like the new-generation Impreza, the next Crosstrek will be more spacious and more fuel-efficient.

We'll learn more about the next-generation Subaru Crosstrek in a few weeks.

Some new features for the 2018 Subaru WRX

Another model based on the Impreza, the Subaru WRX, gets a few improvements this year. This is not a new generation, but the new 2018 Subaru WRX still receives several modifications that make sure it remains up to date.

First there is a new, more rounded style as well as new 19-inch wheels for the 2018 WRX STI. The latter can be fitted with Brembo brakes and also gets a new DCCD system. LED headlights are also added to the WRX lineup. Inside, the 2018 Subaru WRX offers a new Performance group that adds Recaro seats and reduces the overall weight of the car by removing the sunroof, for example.

Under the hood there is no change as the 2018 WRX will still be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine developing 268 horsepower. The Subaru WRX STI is still powered by a 2.5-liter turbo engine that offers 305 horsepower.
